The launch date for The Late Great Wizard is just around the corner and I can hardly wait!
While I'm waiting for the release on Tuesday, September 11, I've been working on several different projects: thinking about what recipes, advice, and book recommendations for the next Newsletter; and doing new additions and rewrites for The Late Great Wizard's sequel, The New Improved Sorceress. Both of these things, plus lots of other writing inspiration, have been keeping me on my toes. Can't wait to share all of it with you, too!]]>
<![CDATA[Extra Exciting! First review from Publishers Weekly]]>Mon, 30 Jul 2018 20:18:43 GMThttp://sarahanover.com/blog/extra-exciting-first-review-from-publishers-weeklyAs you may have already seen on the front page, the latest edition of Publishers Weekly hit, and Late Great Wizard received a wonderful review!
If you haven't seen it yet, here it is:

Publishers Weekly July 30, 2018
Hanover skillfully launches her first series with a delightful contemporary fantasy set in Richmond, Va. College student Tessa Andrews is a lifelong misanthrope still struggling to recover from the disappearance of her father, a gambling addict who vanished along with all the family’s money. When her cantankerous neighbor Professor Brandard’s house burns down, Tessa is abruptly pulled into a hidden world of magic, mystery, and mayhem. Professor Brandard is a phoenix wizard, reborn into a younger body by his death in the fire, and he needs Tessa’s help to regain his magic—both for his own sake and because a great evil is coming. Along the way, Tessa makes and loses new friends, and discovers her own connection to magic as well as magic’s connection to her missing father. Though comfortably nestled in familiar tropes, this clever romp delivers strong characters and a heartfelt tone that will charm fans of the genre. (Sept.)
<![CDATA[Comic-Con Recap]]>Tue, 24 Jul 2018 04:57:32 GMThttp://sarahanover.com/blog/comic-con-recapIt was truly inspiring to see all of the enthusiastic readers at our panel. David Canfield of EW threw us some provocative questions and I think we all contributed good answers. ARCs of WIZARD flew off the shelves! Thank you all for loving books and coming out. That was Saturday. On Friday, PenguinRandom/DAW Books had a giveaway and signing and over 200 of you wonderful people showed up! I'm finishing up Book Two, THE NEW IMPROVED SORCERESS in the next few weeks and I can't wait to turn it in. Comic-Con was crowded, noisy, colorful, imaginative and wonderful.

Magic always comes with consequences and costs, whether it's the sacrifice of years spent studying or a literal, physical sacrifice. How do characters get (or lose) their magic? How can the consequences of magic ramp up the suspense? Acclaimed fantasy novelists Tomi Adeyemi (Children of Blood and Bone), Stephanie Garber (Legendary), Sara Hanover (The Late Great Wizard), Daniel Jose Older (Dactyl Hill Squad, Star Wars: Last Shot), Sam Sykes (Seven Blades in Black), and Sabaa Tahir (A Reaper at the Gates) discuss magic systems, magic spells, and the price of magic with David Canfield (Entertainment Weekly).

Don't worry--I'll be posting photos this weekend, too!
